I joined Wyeth as a business partner working with various business areas inside the Drug Safety and Metabolism area, where my responsibilities included designing and leading the development and implementation of IT solutions for challenging business problems, as well as assisting clients in compliance with GxP regulations for IT systems. I had the opportunity to lead an evaluation deployment of Electronic Laboratory Notebooks within the Research areas, which turned into a successful deployment of a GLP instance covering both regulated & non regulated spaces. This was a significant accomplishment for the team & I, as the business alignment to move to a regulated platform in a non regulated space was significant. I credit this experience as the real foundation for my change management experience.
After this role, I held a variety of roles of increasing responsibility culminating in a role covering Strategy & Operations as well as Senior Business Partner. My responsibility for strategy and operations included daily operations for our Business Systems and Processes team (IT), as well as forward looking strategy development for both the IT organization and our partner client organizations. My primary focus in the strategy role was the data and information strategy for our client organizations, spanning Discovery, Preclinical Development and Vaccines. As the Senior Business Partner for the Drug Safety & Metabolism group, I was also responsible for working with the existing long term business partners to provide overall direction and assistance as well as management of an overall strategy and delivery plan.
This role ended with the acquisition of Wyeth by Pfizer, and the dissolution of our function as we were absorbed into the new company, or caught in the restructuring. I met a great many talented and generous colleagues and partners during this role, and gained a greater appreciation for the complexities of international business. This role also offered me the opportunity to have a number of speaking engagements on lab informatics and related topics, which was a great help in expanding my network and sharpening and sharing ideas.
What my colleagues have said about my work:
Jim is a very talented, technically savvy and focused business consultant and program manager. He keeps clients’ goals in the forefront and drives hard to achieve success. He is a very effective collaborator and does not hesitate to assist in any way he can. Jim has a complete grasp organizational realities, the dynamics of personalities, and diversity of viewpoints. He’s a top performer and pleasure to work with.
Jim shows great leadership and is a real pleasure to work with. His detail oriented approach to project management fosters confidence in all who work with him.
Jim King has been instrumental in helping to make key projects between our companies run smoothly and professionally. Jim’s adherence to process, deadlines and quality control is unyielding, but in doing this, he is able to bring together teams of people to focus on the project goals and outcomes in a way that very few people are capable of doing. When Jim commits to something, he inevitably holds himself to it, which is rare these days.
As a vendor, I had the opportunity to work with Jim on an initiative to introduce an enterprise-wide research informatics solution at Wyeth. I found Jim to be consummate professional during the course of project, providing sound leadership as well as expert technical advice to ensure the project was initiated on time, properly resourced and successfully delivered. I have great confidence in Jim’s abilities to manage and support complex software roll-outs, and look forward to working with him again on future projects.
Jim is extremely customer focused and focuses on doing the right job, for the right reasons. He has the ability to work with the clients to develop their long-term strategy, and work to get the necessary buy-in of senior/top level management. Jim is extremely professional and is always pleasant to work with.
Jim and I have worked together for a number of years. I have always been impressed with his thought leadership, especially in the area of Lab systems and R&D information systems. Jim is thorough, hard working, and develops strong collaborative relationships. A great senior leader who knows how to find bottom line efficiency while delivering advanced technological capabilities to R&D organizations.
Jim’s business acumen and strategic visioning is second to none. To state he can develop, communicate, and execute on a 1, 3, 5, year strategy is an understatement.
I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Jim on life sciences projects specifically related to quality control systems (e.g. LIMS). Jim not only leads his teams to deliver the technology but mentors his teams in the value of business process knowledge for successful implementation.
I have witnessed Jim successfully address executive management and colleagues at Pfizer. Jim is adept at managing budgets and HR aspects which one would expect from a senior leader role. I would have no issue working under or in collaboration with Jim.
Jim has a rare ability to combine a commitment to making his project a success technically while keeping both internal clients and his suppliers on-side. Jim demanded a lot from me as a supplier and at the same time understood my constraints and as a result he achieved excellent results for Pfizer.
I have had the pleasure of working with Jim during his time at Wyeth as well as Pfizer most recently. What differs Jim most from others is his vision and ability to orchestrate change. He confidently represents his beliefs even when it goes against ‘business as usual’.
Jim takes a big picture approach combined with his considerable team building and leadership skills to effect powerful change for the business units he supports. Instead of focusing on needs more founded in a particular system or user group which are indicative of a more holistic business issue, Jim focuses on the data landscape and business process issues. In re-architecting the flow and availability of information and enhancing the overall lab operation, he addresses many of the lower-level issues while achieving more significant ROI.
